A new no-frills gym chain is opening its first site in Manchester’s Spinningfields district.

Pure Gym expects to open in the autumn at 3 Hardman Street, where it has signed a 15-year lease. It plans to have about 20 sites by 2014 and each will cost £850,000 to develop and will employ up to 12 staff. Membership will cost from £9.99 per month and the gyms will be open 24 hours.

Pure Gym was founded by Peter Roberts, Brian Scurrah and Angela Crawshaw, all former directors of Golden Tulip UK, the budget hotel chain.

The business model is based on similar operations in Germany and the USA.
